Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her grandmother and mother. Ford suffered from anxiety disorder that was rooted in the word association when she was a toddler. Ford was interested in acting during her teenaged years, and enrolled in the National Youth Theatre. Ford gained entry to the Sylvia Young Theatre School, but after just a few days, decided that she would not be a good for the school. Ford then applied to be a student in the Central School of Speech and Drama and was admitted on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler who is a character that was recurring for Doctor Who. Ford was graduated in 1993, but in the meantime, she had already made her TV debut on the 1991 season from Surgical Spirit; she adopted her professional title "Catherine Tate". In the Nineties, Tate could be watched on television in programs such as The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning. Alongside her usual theatre work, Tate joined with the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. Tate gained recognition for her stand-up comedy that became part of her resume in 1996.
